The James N. Smith Cemetery contains more than 1,700 graves, with all but about 500 of those graves unmarked. Most, if not all, of the people buried there are thought to be African-American. Of the five headstones from the 1870s that remain, one marks the grave of the cemetery's namesake, John N. Smith.
